In response to the growing adoption of various artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in scientific publishing, the International Society of Addiction Journal Editors (ISAJE) is providing guidance to our community on effectively addressing AI usage in their manuscripts.
Authorship Attribution
Authors are advised to exercise caution when employing AI for data analysis and manuscript writing, as inadvertent disclosure of sensitive information is a potential risk. It is essential to thoroughly review and validate AI-generated content to ensure compliance with ethical and privacy standards. Vigilance in data handling and model training is paramount to prevent unintentional leakage of confidential or personally identifiable information, loss of intellectual property, or inadvertently adopting the intellectual property of others. Authors should approach AI tools with a keen awareness of their capabilities and potential pitfalls to uphold the integrity and security of their research.
Acknowledging AI Usage
However, recognizing the significance of AI in modern research, we recommend including an acknowledgment in the manuscript when AI has been used. This acknowledgment should specify the areas or tasks for which AI was employed. To streamline this process, we have created a checklist that authors can utilize to identify the AI-driven aspects of their research. This checklist includes common applications of AI in scientific publishing:

- Text Generation: AI algorithms used to generate or assist in drafting sections of the manuscript
- Image Processing: AI-driven image analysis, enhancement, or recognition
- Statistical Analysis: AI-powered statistical tools for hypothesis testing or modelling
- Recommendation Systems: AI-based systems that suggest related literature or citations.
- Language Translation: Utilization of AI for translating research findings or content
